If you are a full-time or part-time student at UW and would like to work either as a student projectionist or a student camera operator please feel free to contact Tammi Beaulieu by email, phone ext. 33031, or drop off a résumé at MC-1063. Due to the volume of applications we may not be able to respond to all inquiries.
How much is the pay?
Operators are paid $15/hour. Training is paid at a rate of $10.25/hour.
How many hours do operators work?
It all depends on how much work we have and whether or not this work can fit your schedule. For a further explanation, see the question below "How does an operator get work?". Last year each of our operators worked an average of 40 hours/semester in the Fall and Winter terms.
How does an operator get work?
We receive assignment requests from staff and faculty on campus. The assignments are then made available to the operators we've hired. Operators come in to our office to check for available assignments and sign up for the ones that fit their schedule.
Can I work as both a Camera Operator and as a Student Projectionist?
This depends on both our needs and your interests. At times we are in need of only camera operators or only projectionists; other times we need both. Some people like to do both camera work and projections; others prefer to do just one or the other.
When is the best time to apply?
The best time to apply is before the semester you would like to start working. We prefer to do our hiring and training the last few weeks before the start of a semester. Because of annual student turnover and the cycle of requests we receive, most of our hiring takes place before the Fall semester, during July and August.
What kind of experience do I need? Do you provide training?
You don't have to have a great deal of audio-visual experience, but it sure can help. We provide training (and it's paid!). We're looking for operators who have a strong ability in picking up technical skills during training, who can troubleshoot, and who also relate well to people in a service environment.
Can operator experience with ITMS ever help with further employment in the Audio Visual sector? Yes it can. A number of UW graduates have gone on to work with audio visual companies and departments. Some have gone on to further studies in media production and some have set up their own production companies.
