- You can use a combination of payment methods to settle the balance on your student account; however, you need to keep these things in mind:
- if you are paying your fees in full (ie not using a Promissory Note to arrange your fees) you need to be sure the account is paid in full by the due date, to avoid being charged a Late Fee.
- Undergraduate students: be sure you've "paid in full" or have submitted the Promissory Note by the due date to be sure you have access to the online learning system (Desire2Learn).
- if you are using a Promissory Note, you must attach proof of a completed payment in the amount of any remaining balance calculated on the form, when you submit the form.
- if you're sending a payment from outside Canada or the US, you must use either a Travelex bank-to-bank transfer or an international wire transfer. We can't accept bank drafts originating outside Canada or the US.
- If you pay your account balance with more than one payment, the account will be considered "paid in full" as at the date of the final payment. If that's after the due date, a Late Fee will be charged to your student account.
- The University cannot reimburse staff or faculty who choose to cover any fees posted to a student’s account, regardless of the reason. Departments wishing to provide financial assistance to students need to authorize an award through Student Awards & Financial Aid or offer payment via an RA- or TA-ship.
- You can use funding from the following sources
to pay some or all of your fees; BUT, you can't just deduct the funding amount and pay the difference! Please review the information & instructions on our website under Using Financial Aid to be sure you get registered properly and avoid a Late Fee.

- scholarships (either uWaterloo or external scholarships payable to University of Waterloo),
- bursaries,

Arrange an international wire transfer
- To pay your fees from outside Canada, you may wish to consider using the Travelex Bank to Bank Transfer; please see the instructions below for arranging a Travelex Bank to Bank Transfer.
- If you're making your payment from a bank account outside of Canada and you are not able to use the Travelex Bank to Bank Transfer, you may send your payment by international wire transfer. You'll need to follow these instructions . Please forward a scanned copy of your wire advice to studentaccounts@uwaterloo.ca to assist us in identifying your payment when it arrives.
- The University of Waterloo won't deduct bank charges from your wire transfer payment, however it's quite possible that your bank or an intermediate bank through which the payment is processed, will deduct charges from the amount of your transfer. Please check with your bank when you're arranging your transfer so that you can be sure to send the right amount.
- International wire transfers can take up to three weeks to appear on your Quest account. Please track the payment by contacting your own bank.

Don't pay by credit card
- The University of Waterloo doesn't accept payment of student account fees by credit card. Significant fees would be charged to the University for offering this payment method, which would eventually result in increased student fees.
The University is also committed to encouraging students to avoid using credit cards to finance their education. The interest charged on credit card balances would substantially increase the financial burden for students over the course of their studies.

Use a Travelex Bank-to-Bank transfer
- To avoid high retail exchange rates and banking charges related to international wire transfers, and to pay in your home currency and ensure your funds are clearly identifiable to the University when they arrive, Travelex Bank to Bank transfer is the preferred method.
- Select the Travelex Bank to Bank Transfer link
- Enter your personal information
- Enter the Canadian dollar balance of fees you wish to pay
- Select the payment currency (what you will pay your bank) from the list; if your currency is not listed, please use the International Wire Transfer method instead, to pay your fees.
- Finalize the transaction by following the instructions
- Take the confirmation page to your local bank; your bank will transfer the appropriate amount to Travelex
- Travelex will then forward the correct Canadian dollar amount to University of Waterloo where it will be posted to your student account. Travelex transfers generally appear as payments on your student account within approximately ten days from the time your bank initiates the transfer.
Don't pay by cash, debit or e-mail money transfer
- The University of Waterloo can't accept payment of student account fees with cash, e-mail transfer or debit card.

Removing a "Fees owing" hold
- If the balance on your student account remains unpaid several weeks after the start of term, a "Fees Owing" hold will automatically be applied to your student account, restricting your access to transcripts and to future enrolment. The amount indicated in the hold may not reflect the actual balance overdue. To have the hold removed quickly, you will need to provide Student Accounts with proof of a bank payment fully paying the overdue balance displayed on your Quest account. You may bring the proof of payment to our office, or you may forward it by e-mail to studentaccounts@uwaterloo.ca
- Holds related to overdue fees and fines may also be placed on your student account by Parking Services, Health Services, Library Services, your own department and Housing. You can't repay these amounts by bank payment.
You'll need to contact the specific area that placed the hold to find out how to pay the outstanding amount and have the hold removed. Payment options vary depending on the department, and Student Accounts staff cannot remove holds placed by other departments.
- Holds related to outstanding Emergency Loans can only be removed by Student Awards & Financial Aid or the Graduate Studies Office. You can repay an Emergency Loan at the Student Accounts office using cash, debit, credit card, certified cheque, money order, bank draft. You can't repay an Emergency Loan by bank payment.
