NSW (Servers) Group
Meeting Summary
July 6, 1998
Present: Neil Patterson, Ernie Hanson, Mike Borkowski, Charles Woods,
Dave Kibble
97.2 Upgrade
A number of issues and tasks related to the 97.2 upgrade were discussed,
including:
- the date is set for early during the week of July 20th
- SunOS patches are noted in the upgrade documents (Charles to forward);
these could be installed prior to the upgrade
- the webvoyage directory structure needs to be examined
- we appear to have sufficient disk space (48GB) partition that Endeavor
is happy with
- there is a risk though that there will be an unmirrored period where a
disk failure would cause some potentially significant problems
- a set of documents is available in the project space (some are in word
format; we'll convert as requested)
- the upgrade is likely to take Endeavor 1-2 days to complete
- we will do a complete system backup prior to the start of the
conversion process; we are waiting for a checklist of steps and milestones
from Donna Hillcoat
- we will need to verify the distribution of software on the various
servers that will be performed (or not)
- no upgrades to Oracle were noted
- the limits problem will likely disappear with the new stateful web (to
be reviewed)
Database Security
Some of the concerns as discussed at VPMG were noted. Further information
on options, rules and policies is pending from Endeavor (Donna Hillcoat).
Public Printing
The current recommendation is an arrangement with Graphics services
involving PrintMaster in the short term, followed by an investigation of
the GM software (Fall 98 and Winter 99). This depends to some extent on
the timing of the GM option. Dave has asked John Cunningham and Mike
Jack/Linda Norton for confirmation/agreement to this plan. Charles will
get a demo of the PrintMaster software from Ron Hossler.
TUG Web Space
There was general agreement that a move of the TUG web site from "library"
to one of the Trellis boxes was a reasonable step. Dave has sent a note to
Mark Wilson to verify that Endeavor has no concerns. This is also
something that could be done in a separate area prior to the upgrade
(Charles and Ernie to work out the details as needed). This is a limited
space (approx. 20 pages) which will see no substantial increase in the
short term. The more important issue will be in access numbers (e.g. as
ERL usage increases). Most of those staff needing account access for
maintenance already have accounts on a Trellis server.
Server Upgrade
Dave has asked Mark Wilson for a recommendation on how we plan for an
upgrade to the server infrastructure. The peak load is anticipated in
October.
Other Items
- Support - Discussions are continuing with Jay and Martin regarding
oncall support; interim arrangements are in place for the next few weeks.
There is a need/desire to develop some general documentation regarding the
operation and troubleshooting checklist for the application. Charles will
try to pull together an initial "how it works" write-up to start things
off.
- IP restrictions - Dave to check to ensure that we have all of the
necessary IP sets to implement this properly.
- Downtime - Charles has been logging any known or substantial downtime
events. Some improvements are still pending on the regular Sunday/Monday
database processes.
- Shells/xhier - Completion of these will wait until after the 97.2
software is available and the upgrade completed.
- Swappable Disks - The new hot spares have arrived and are waiting
installation. Ernie to send a note to Charles on a possible schedule
(likely before the upgrade).
- Z39.50 - Ernie to verify the startup script.
- IST Demo - Charles will arrange for the demo of the functional
software.
- Problems - The "temp space" problem remains under investigation, as is
the leftover process issue (possible WinU connection). Additional
follow-up with Neil/Ernie/Charles as needed.
- Outstanding Items - A number of outstanding items need to be looked at
after the upgrade in order to "complete" the project. These include some
documents, like the central site agreement and disaster recovery paper.
- Vacations - Neil is scheduled to be away from August 5-24; Dave is
away from July 27 to Aug 7
