Parents

Welcome to the Office for Persons with Disabilities (OPD) at the University of Waterloo.

As parents you have played a significant role in assisting your children throughout their academic careers and that beginning university will be a major transition in both you and your student's life.

To ease this transition, we offer a two day transition program "Open Doors" for students with learning disabilities during the summer to help prepare them for their transition to post-secondary education.

Our team of professional and support staff offer services to help students in their studies through instruction on strategies to improve their learning and study skills and our Education & Technology Lab and Adaptive Technology Centre offer students access to current assistive technology to further enhance their learning.

Our approach is student-centred and incorporates the students' right to:

  • self-determination
  • dignity
  • confidentiality
  • empowerment

Confidentiality:

  • All information with respect to a student's needs, support needs, learning accommodations and documentation shared in the OPD is held in confidence.
  • Students wishing their parents to have access to information must provide the OPD with written consent.
