Vice-President, External Relations: Duties and Responsibilities
The vice-president, external relations is responsible for the offices of development and alumni affairs, communications and public affairs, and government relations, with particular responsibility for the university’s central public relations and communications activities, as well as for the development and implementation of fundraising and external liaison strategies. The vice-president, external relations reports to President David Johnston and is a member of the university’s Executive Council.
Meg Beckel
Meg Beckel began a five-year appointment as vice-president, external relations at the University of Waterloo on October 1, 2007. She came to UW from the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto, where she was appointed president and executive director of the Royal Ontario Museum Foundation in 1998. The following year she became the museum’s first chief operating officer, serving as spokesperson on all operational and board governance matters and overseeing day-to-day operations, including management of the capital and operating budgets.
Prior to her appointment at the ROM, Beckel served as executive director, external relations and president of the University of Victoria Foundation from 1995 to 1998. Her previous positions include manager of individual giving for the University of Calgary, director of the Vancouver Symphony Society and Foundation, and development director for the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre. Earlier she worked in development with the National Ballet of Canada. She began her career at the Bank of Nova Scotia, serving as officer in charge of operations and as assistant manager, corporate banking.
Meg Beckel holds a BA in political science (Queen’s, 1981) and an MBA (Western, 1986).
