Since WATgreen began in 1990, water costs have increased by about 40%. Water costs account for 4% of The Department of Plant Operations operating budget. They have installed devices to minimize the flush on toilets, and the water pressure on showers. Their innovations have led to significant reductions in the University's water consumption. Buildings are pre-cooled overnight, when the air is cooler, and the costs are lower, so that water and energy used in air conditioning buildings has been reduced. Students have carried out water audits and designed a campus wide recycling system, which lead to the recycling of water in chillers.

There are also projects on water quality of the creek that runs through the campus, and evaluation of other aquatic systems and new technologies.

Projects are available either on the world wide web or in the Dana Porter (Arts) Library, Special Collections
